HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST GAMBIA

An Anglican brother Mr. Eddie Carol, Director of youth for Christ- The Gambia attended a conference in Freetown in 1988. He met Brother Kwasi Ansah (as he then was) who was conducting an evangelistic campaign.

He invited Brother Ansah to The Gambia. He came as the main speaker of a two week- Holy Ghost session at the Methodist Church, Bakau. At that time, Pentecostalism was not known in the Gambia.

The power of God was mightily demonstrated with many being born again and Baptized in the Holy Spirit. Out of that campaign a group of few Gambians and Ghanaians started meeting at one Mr. Joshua Annor’s (now Anglican Priest) residence at Latrikunda German.

They were Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Quayson, Mr. Joshua Annor, Mr. & Mrs. Ernest A. Essuman, Mr.&Mrs. William Gyane, Mr. Francis Forbes (Now Founder and Head of Abiding Word Ministries, Mr. Henry Ofori, Miss. Adel Fraser, Mrs. Maria Ashcroft, Late Mrs. Harriet Orien, Mr.& Mrs. Lamptey, Miss. Rose Quansah, Mr. Philip Coker (demised).

Brother Ansah left for Freetown and came back a month later and continued in evangelism and discipleship of the group previously gathered. He then shared the vision of forming a branch of the Church of Pentecost in the Gambia. This was gladly received and accepted by the group and the Church was registered. in 1988. The core group was used to start as a Limited liability with registration number 152/1988 on 1st December 1988.

Information was sent to the International Headquarters and Apostle Ato Addison the then General Secretary of the Church, officially visited in early 1989. He went back with a good report and Pastor S.K.Baidoo (as he then was) now Apostle Dr. S.K.Baidoo the current I.M.D. was appointed the first missionary at the general Council meeting in 1989. He came to the Gambia in the company of the late Prophet M.K.Yeboah, the then Chairman, late Apostle Nartey, Pastor Peter Ayerakwa (as he then was) and Apostle Ato Addison for his official welcome  and to assume the Headship of  the Church.
